Japan continued to field new fighters in the final year of the Pacific war. Shiden and Shiden-Kai fighters reached surviving operational Japanese units just in time to face tidal waves of American fighters, especially the F6F Hellcat, over the Philippines, Formosa, and the Japanese home islands. Author Tony Holmes has the story in "Hellcat vs Shiden/Shiden-Kai", an Osprey Duel Series book. The U.S. Navy's F6F was fielded to operational units beginning in early 1943. Like many other U.S. weapons systems of the Second World War, it was fielded in huge quantities, making up for any possible shortcomings it might have against newer Japanese aircraft. Likewise, a full capacity training pipeline ensured a ready supply of capable pilots. The Shiden and Shiden-Kai had significant teething issues, but Japan's biggest single challenge at that point in the war was putting trained and experienced aviators in their cockpits. The book devotes the bulk of its narrative to the combat encounters of the Hellcat and Shiden/Shiden-Kai. Of note, the author is frank to admit the difficulty of reconstructing some of those combats due to lost or incomplete records. Also of note, the author documents the tendency on both side to exaggerate aerial combat victories. Highly recommended as a good read, backed by lots of period photographs and modern illustrations and diagrams.
This is an awesome addition to the Osprey Duel series! The artwork is amazing and the research behind the photos and text are impeccable! The iconic Grumman F6F Hellcat is pretty well-known to most aviation enthusiasts but the N1K1/2 Shiden/Shiden-kai or "George" is less well-known! This volume is extremely valuable for any WWII aviation enthusiasts library! I highly recommend the Osprey Duel series books as well as all the other Osprey Publishing aviation titles!
Hellcat versus Shiden/Shiden-Kai is Number 91 in Osprey's successful Duel series, pitting the Grumman F6F Hellcat against Kawanishi's N1K1-J and -2J Shiden (Violet Lightning) series, called "George" by the Allies. The two opposing fighters went head to head during 1944 and 1945, particularly during operations over Japan itself.Series editor Tony Holmes properly dedicates the volume to the late Henry Sakaida, one of the stellar figures among U.S. authorities on Japanese aircraft and aviators. Duel 91 owes much to Henry's definitive study of 343rd Kokutai, aka "Genda's Circus," which brought the modified Shiden-Kai to fruition int he final months of the war.The Shiden had a long, circuitous development, as traced in the book. From the N1K1 "Rex" floatplane fighter it morphed into a land-based interceptor, the N1K1-J, which suffered serious design and production faults. The improved N1K2-J, redesigned for ease of manufacture, but too few were built to affect the course of the air war--only about 1,500 of the land-based versions versus some 12,000 Hellcats. The text provides personal insight for many of the Japanese naval officers and enlisted pilots who flew Georges. In several instances, combat details are clear enough to identify winners and losers on each side.Holmes recounts numerous combats in which Hellcats tangled with Georges, and pilots of USS Hornet's (CV-12) Air Group 17 were frequent George opponents. Not surprisingly, attrition was heavy. While U.S. identification of enemy aircraft often proved lacking, in the summary Holmes concludes that U.S. naval aviators attained an 8-1 victory-loss ratio against Japan's late-war single-engine fighters. As with all Duel titles, numerous black and white photos plus color illustrations attract readers' attention. One glitch, however: the photo on page 74 is not USS Essex's Air Group 83, as stated in the caption, but Bunker Hill's Air Group 84.
