Drew Hayes has a way of creating characters that I find easy to like. The characters in this book are no different. Jack Is a rogue who can make you smile with his whit. All of the characters are easy to like yet mildly tragic at the same time. While there are moments in the book that tug at your heart strings overall the book is fast paced and will make you smile.Like many of his other books Second Hand Curses makes me smile and look forward to what will happen in the future. There are also many Easter eggs in the book if you pay close attention and know your fairy tails well. Little things that tip you off o what is going on and who people may be. If you like to unravel minor plot points ahead of time this book will give you the opportunity to test your skills.Overall the characters are compelling, the writing is well done, the story is fast paced and it is a fun listen. I highly recommend it.
If you need a delightful palette cleanser between series, this is an excellent choice. It's a fun take on different fairy tales. At first it seems like the entire book is more a collection of short stories, but after the first few encounters/missions it gels into a coherent story arc. Maybe it's meant as some sort of metaphor about Jack, the main character, but the story never really commits to anything except the protagonists themselves. It always pulls away at the last minute, teasing with the unfulfilled promise of more. It has a few gory descriptions but overall the story is light on description. It's humorous in parts, but not truly funny. It has deep moments, but overall keeps at arm's length emotionally. It's enjoyable and clever and a good way to pass the time but it doesn't deeply satisfy like many novels. It's a cotton candy read, but sometimes that's just what a person needs.
This book is basically a re-imagining of most fairy tales adjusted for modern capitalist realities, where everything has a price, and practicality beats honor 11 times out of 10. Our protagonists are basically fixers who solve fairy tale problems for a price in a rather grim realistic way. (how to stop kidnappers? Kill them all of course). The book is fun to read if you like this twist approach, however, most cases become very predictable after we see how our "heroes" deal with the first 2-3. Still a good book worth checking out.
Hopefully the start of another great series from this exceptional author. This is a real page turner with plenty of action, humor and a little tear jerker too. Hope there is another book in the works and that it's out soon!
This is a chronicle of a series of unfortunate events, for a lot of people. Three travellers, each with their own baggage must overcome their own life stories to help others. Oh, they're mercenaries, but they all have a save the world complex too. Mr. Hayes weaves the histories of these characters into the tapestry of the lives around them with expertise. Jack is nimble, but why? Frank is pretty well put together, but it isn't always easy. And don't forget the princess, there is always a princess and she always fights a beast, doesn't she? Each task on their quests is a short tale that is easily read and satisfying in and of themselves, yet they come together into a larger whole that promises more to come.
The author kicked off the Non Player Character genre for me with his NPCs https://www.amazon.com/NPCs-Spells-Swords-Stealth-Book-ebook/dp/B00KB2RLKOI have enjoyed that series and am looking forward to the next. This book gives us a variation on NPC. Rather than a game this plays with the fairy tale trope. We see some characters from different fairy tales in a new light. Some are a little different than you'd expect and there is a fair amount of world mixing. All that being said, this is a nice read, engaging character development and some bittersweet backstories to make you think.I like his stuff and will keep buying his work.
Having already parodied vampires, superheroes and dungeon adventurers, Drew Hayes has now embarked on a send-up of the fairy tale genre. As usual for his books, the clichés aren't what they seem and the main characters are likable, even if they are rogues. The slowly revealed backstories of the characters give the book more depth than a simple string of warped versions of familiar stories. Since fairy tales are a huge pool of material to draw from, one hopes that this book is just the beginning of a new series.
100% LOVED THIS BOOK!(to be fair, I love all of his books) But it's nice to see something new from one of my favorite authors and to be rewarded with a great new book! Hopefully a favorite new series? *hint hint, Drew* <3
