This book is an absolute success at creating an overview and a detailed analysis of what really happened prior and up to the Coup on July 15th. It is absolutely fascinating to read about the transformation of the GM through time and its relationship to Erdogan and his AK party. It is honestly enlightening to learn about how western academia and media has been fooled by GM and has misunderstood many details about Turkish politics over the years. This indeed is why this publication is so important. The authors, specialized on Turkey and Gülen are providing us a perspective through their academic lens, which at least to me, is mostly new and never before read material. Not all is perfect, however. I would, if I may, raise two issues which come to mind when reading this book. One is repetition – this is a natural occurrence because several people are writing about the same topic, yet for the reader, some notes tend to be repeated. Another issue is the lack of scrutiny of Erdogan. I personally feel that after reading this book, that Gülen is a power-hungry manipulator who tried to overthrow a democratically elected government. Erdogan, on the other hand, almost appears as a victim here. I have a rather limited academic knowledge about this subject, yet there seems to be a devastating reaction by him as he is jailing thousands of teachers, professors etc. Surely, it is shortly noted in the book that this is seen as excessive and civil rights have been ignored – yet I wonder if a bit more criticism towards Erdogan’s policies would be appropriate.Conclusively it remains to be said that this is a great and indispensable work, and a very important book to understand Turkey today and examine its further developments for the middle East, and the rest of the world.
Overall, this book was fascinating to read and made excellent, varied points in each chapter. While I enjoyed certain chapters (such as one and three) more than others (such as seven and eight) the perspectives on the power struggle between the Gulenists and the AK party, along with the underlying conflict in Turkey between secularism and non-secularism were profound. I think this allowed my eyes to be more opened to the coup and the political atmosphere and complications surrounding contemporary Turkey. The Gulen movement is an interesting study and their leadership’s residence within the U.S. makes their study all the more relevant contemporarily for study.
This thoroughly comprehensive book unfolds the events leading to the coup of July 2016 by contextualizing the country’s rich history and its political figures. It further elaborates on the Gülen movement and explores the “symbiotic relationship†between the movement and the AK Party in great depth. Overall, a source which provides a sound pedagogical understanding of the coup’s significance and what factors distinguishes it from prior coups.
The book Turkey’s July 15th Coup: What Happened and Why provides unique insight into the political history and intricacies of secular Turkey, the rise of political Islam and the Gülen Movement. This topical compilation by well-known Turkish scholars Hakan Yavuz and Bayram Balci brings together researchers with similar focuses and provides the reader with a general overview of the events before, during and after July 15th Coup while bringing in the unique expertise of the different authors throughout the book. The introduction is valuable to readers, especially those who are unfamiliar with the basic political history of Turkey. Yavuz guides readers from the beginning a brief overview of Turkey’s secularization process. In 1923, Mustafa Kemal demanded the secularization in Turkey, in order to keep up with modernization and remain independent of colonial powers. These reforms effectively separated church and state in the country, although historically the Turkish government and secular military ensure that religion is controlled by the state. This makes Turkey’s secularism distinct from traditional Western secularism except in the unique case of France which Mujeeb R. Khan goes into more detail in Chapter two. To fill the vacuum the Kemalist movement relies on Turkish nationalism to unite the people. To understand the ramifications of the coup and the growth of the Gülen Movement it is critical to recognize the impacts of Kemalism today. Yavuz gives readers the information to allow them to asses this on their own. He also outlines the growth of the Gülen movement of which he expands in the following chapter. The author does an excellent job compiling general information about the rise of the Gülen Movement. Yavuz’s unique insight into the nuances of the Gülen Movement and the intricacies of the Gülen networks is truly enlightening for a reader. He details the rise of the Gülen Movement through their command of education, media outlets and the market-economy. The Gülen Movement is widely misunderstood and largely unknown especially in the United States, his research sheds light on the organization and motivating factors of the movement. In chapter one Yavuz walks the reader through the development of the Gülen Movement from its leader Fethullah Gülen in the late 1970s. The Gülen Movement is the revival of the Muslim tradition through education and work based in the neo-Sufi ideology of Said Nursî.Yavuz expands on his introduction in this chapter and is able to identify the beginning and development of the Gülen movement in three distinct phases. The beginning of the movement was solely religious, in the 1970s gaining notoriety for developing the cemmat, or the religious community. At the end of this phase the cemaat begins taking shape and targeting their message transnationally. The second stage saw the development of the movement begin mobilizing through the aforementioned outlets. At this time, the Gülen Movement continues spreading because of their command of media and business. The last stage which we are currently in began in 2002 with the rise of the AK Party. The Gülen Movement worked closely with the AK Party and even supported the rise of President Erdogan until their fracturing in 2013. The most important lessons to be taken from this chapter is the development of the Gülen Movement and the spread of the movement and growth of the cemaat systemically through their transnational and national networks’ control of these various outlets and consequently, their ability to continue to gain traction in their movement.Yavuz’s understanding and research makes for a truly unique read, few have such insight into the movement and are able to articulately share it. He details the structure of the movement internally, the hizmet and elder brothers, the followers, and they sympathizers. Understanding the functions of these circles is critical in understanding how to movement functions externally. Through these networks they are able to mobilize their followers through business, charity and education activities. This is additionally how they disseminate information, gain support and mobilize their followers, internally. These circles effectively build their network and have allowed them to work abroad and globalize their movement. To truly understand the Gülen Movement one must understand its origins, development and organization both internally and externally and how they work together. It is only through its development that the members through effective networking and intelligence gathering they were able to prop themselves politically in Turkey.
