About the Author

As a student, Paul had his first solo backpacking experience when he took a bus from his Cambridgeshire home all the way to Casablanca. Morocco instantly enchanted him. After an interlude when he trained and worked as a molecular biologist, he eventually returned to work as a tour guide, trekking in the Atlas and trying not to lose passengers in the Fez medina. He returns on a regular basis both as coordinating author for Lonely Planet's Morocco and for recreation, and is currently fighting the temptation to buy an old medina townhouse to restore into a more permanent bolt-hole.

I found this guide to be excellent. I purchased it specifically because it had a section on Haiti, although it is small compared to the Dominican section. All the places we visited in the Dominican Republic that were recommended in this guide were exactly as described-all great places. I would like to see more affordable hotels, particularly in Santo Domingo though. I felt the guide gave a good representation of the culture and history of the two countries, and I particulalry liked the updated Haiti section reflecting the earthquake. I felt the section on Haiti was lacking, in general though, but that may not be the author's fault as things in Haiti are very unreliable. Given the number of foreign aid workers in Haiti, it would be nice to have more information available, however. The prices in Haiti were significantly higher than in the guide book.

Great book with great advice. We used this and a book by Katherine Tuider to guide our travels through the Dominican. We used both because at any given time both had current and outdated information (such is the Dominican). Overall the maps were a problem since the DR is rapidly developing its roadway systems. At any point at least one to all 4 maps we were using (two from the DR) were completely useless and outdated.Overall this book had great information, great recommendations on travel places and decent maps.

This got me through the whole country just fine. Even the random non-paved sketchy roads as a short cut to other cities. Found all the hotels/motels/haciendas/cafes/restaurants perfectly and enjoyed being able to compare and know what to look for before entering the hotels to start bargaining for prices

A little dated. The maps didn't help at all when I was walking and the people living there couldn't even make sense of them. the rest was okay as a knowledge base.

Very helpful guide, but it misses some of the cheap spots. Nevertheless, I have it and lend it to friends coming to D.R. They can find useful info and history notes there. Then, they can build it from there.

Great book as are all of the Lonely Planet guides. Took a long time to arrive.

Great guide. I travelled for 20 days, and it was helpful for sights, culture, transport and lodging.

I found the book to have limited information. Overall I really like Lonely Planet books and own at least a dozen. This one would rank at the bottom of the list for me. But, there aren't many guidebooks out there about the DR or Haiti; so I think Lonely Planet did the best they could do.
