I was not aware of A. Aubrey Bodine as a photographer until quite recently when I saw this book in a catalog. We are big fans of the Western Maryland Railway and when I saw that the WM was featured in this book, I had to have it. His daughter has produced a splendid digital library of his very skillful and artistic photographs for the Baltimore Sun. Some of the ones featured in this book were also published in the 1950s in a book written by Harold A. Williams, Jr.: The Western Maryland Railway Story. I am sure the reproduction in the 1950s book did not do justice to his beautiful images, knowing the printing standards of the time. In the Schiffer book, there are superb deep blacks and fine gradations of black and white shades, some of which is undoubtedly due to good scanning values used to produce the files for printing. Other railroads of the Baltimore and Maryland area are also included. I highly recommend this book to railroad photography fans and any lover of fine photographic books.

This is one of the best railroad books I’ve ever seen. My husband is the collector but I couldn’t put this book down myself. You get lost in these photographs, they are amazing. Engaging - even captivating.

Excellent B&W train art photography by an acclaimed master!

Exactly what I wanted, did not disappoint!

This is a loving tribute by Jennifer Bondine showcasing the talent and art of her father's photography. Since he worked for the media, his work has a strong documentary feel rather than simply beautiful pictures. But that eye for moment is complemented by true talent - from the choice of lenses, angles, and subjects to darkroom wizardry. And although we only get a small view of the world here (e.g., 3 decades of Maryland-area trains and the people who worked on them), the work is inspiring on many levels.Bodine operated in the 1950s to the 1970s, a time when steam was transitioning into the diesel era due to economic considerations (steam engines had to be built for specific routes but diesel engines were universal - making economies of scale more appealing with diesel). Trains that used to be classified by the number of wheels in each axle through the Whyte system (e.g., 2-8-4 steam engine) were now being called by names such as the EMD F7 covered wagon. Bodine was there documenting this transition from steam to diesel, often contrasting the smokey steam engines against the sleek new diesels. For me, there were two important appeals to this book. As a photographer, I greatly respected and appreciated the artistry and skill that was clearly evident in each photograph. From the choice of lenses (wide angle was a favorite of Bodine in order to magnify the majesty of the trains and create visual interest through the distortion) to the variety of compositions, it is all beautifully done. Bodine used juxtaposition, lighting, golden mean, curves, subject priority, rule of thirds, and angles to perfection. From an image of railway workers pushing carts, of which two are in a pool of light and two are out of it, to images of standing engines juxtoposed against their station in the background. There is so much to really love and appreciate here.I also found a lot to respect when examining the pictures and imagining what was done in the dark room. Even a large format camera cannot capture a wide dynamic range of light like our eyes can; overcast skies or blue skies turn pure white in black and white - creating empty space that is glaring and distracting. Bodine had no issues with manipulating the photos in the dark room - adding clouds, changing light and dark values, and really showcasing his own artistic and creative talents. This was at a time when documentary photography was being pushed to be 'unretouched' and raw, especially in the 1960s. In instances, you can see the post processing work in many of these images - in an era before photoshop, clouds in the sky may overlay some areas of the foreground subject. But if I had a wish, it would be a comparison of the before and after post processing to really showcase Bodine's artistry. Also equally important is that we have an important period of American history here. The war was over, America was transitioning from East Coast to West Coast, the trains were changing from steam to diesel, and technology was morphing how trains were used. Images from the 1950s make a stunning contrast to the end of the 1960s, when we go from caring of the steam engines to junkyards ripping them apart for scrap. As someone who grew up with a father who loved to photograph trains as a hobby, I found this all so rewarding and saw many parallels to what I experienced with trains, 20 years later. I grew up with the transition of the covered wagons to the ubiquitous EMDs and GEs of today. Where Bodine was capturing the F7s replacing the steam engines, in the late 1970s we were capturing the elusive disappearing F7s in favor of the GE AC6000CW types. Where Bodine was using cumbersome wide format cameras, my father had the advantage of smaller film cameras with color film. And where Bodine's images are works of art, my father's were raw documentaries of the time and era.If there is one detractor to the book, it's that it covers a very small geographic location - Maryland -and really only one train line. There's a lovely introduction that gives the history of that train line and also more information about Bodine himself and the era in which he worked. Every image is stunning, there is detailed information on nearly every photograph in the back, and though the book is fairly short, each image is full page (some frustratingly crossing the spine, though, so the comp was hard to appreciate). In all, great for photographers, historians, and especially train enthusiasts. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

A beautiful book of vintage and historical train photographs. There is some text with a short biography and background of the photographs. Anyone with an interest in Trains, photographs and history will enjoy this book.

This is a beautifully illustrated book on trains as captured by the famed photographer A. Aubrey Bodine. This book helps us all remember the history and legacy of the Western Maryland Railway, as well as the glory and wonder of all railroads and the hardworking and dedicated people who made it all possible.

Beautiful and informative. I imagine it would make a great gift and a great coffee table book. Very, very beautiful.
