William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon in April, 1564, and his birth is traditionally celebrated on April 23. The facts of his life, known from surviving documents, are sparse. Braunmuller is Distinguished Professor of English and Comparative Literature at the University of California at Los Angeles. He is also general editor of The New Cambridge Shakespeare.   Stephen Orgel is the Jackson Eli Reynolds Professor of the Humanities at Stanford University and general editor of the Cambridge Studies in Renaissance Literature and Culture. Purchased this as required reading for my sons' high school literature classes. They have used several in the series, and it makes understanding Shakespeare MUCH easier. They juxtapose the traditional play on one side with modern translation on the other....most kids don't realize what amazing stories he tells because the language just seems...well, weird. They can finally understand what the teacher is actually trying to talk to them about -- imagery, figurative language, symbolism and style -- in a way they can actually relate to. Very useful book to expand on why Shakespeare was one of the greatest storytellers of his time.

There are many versions of Shakespeare's play that give excellent annotations, and as far as that goes, I like the layout of the book. But the line numbers are done wrong. This will not matter to many, and if you don't care about line numbers then this will be a good book for you. I teach English and spend a couple of class periods explaining how the numbering works and how two or three actors can each have a single part of a single line of poetry. None of that lesson works with this book except to point out how even editors can get it wrong or don't really care. Still I want to emphasize that if you are not picky about line numbers then this is a 5-star book for you--good intro and good materials at the back of the book.

I didn't actually realize this was a book/DVD combo. I just wanted the DVD but the book version is very nice as well. I'm a teacher and used this DVD at a previous school but my current school didn't own a copy so I bought this one. This presentation is a video of a stage production and I really like how it's done. In a few scenes, the producers have meshed two parts together or switched a couple things around but I actually like it because I feel like it flows better and make sense chronologically. If you're showing it for school just be aware that the Macbeths engage in PDA pretty frequently and there is a generous use of fake blood. All in all I feel the producers do a great job of staying true to the play itself and also the vibe Shakespeare would have probably been going for while helping modern audiences relate to it.

This is a fast moving and rather swashbuckling and bloody staging of the Scottish play. It isn't as creepy and scary as the Patrick Stewart version currently available - aside: Stewart really worked at creating scary and succeeding. . . However, this version does scare as all sorts of odd things and people (ghosts and witches and daggers) magically appear onstage in a way that would make Penn and Teller proud... It is really entertaining. OF all the versions of the Scottish play I've seen staged and listened to, this is the one I would show to a younger audience. The stage is smallish and serves up an easily followable play. The dialog is understandable and not overly dense. The players are earthy, dirty, stinky, and not well mannered (sometimes). It is easy to Identify with those characters. It is still one of Shakespeare's bloodiest plays. So beware of that.

The format on kindle is odd. I think the printed version would work better. The line numbers don’t match up with what the teacher quotes, and they are hard to determine while you are reading because of the way the pages are formatted. BUT, the modern interpretation is very helpful for my 15 year old. AND you can search key words like fair and foul, which make finding quotes (if not their proper line numbers) fast and easy.

In the theater, people apparently don't call Shakespeare's "Macbeth" by its actual name -- it's usually called "MacB" or "The Scottish Play." The dark superstitions that hover around this play really show its power: it's a harrowing portrait of a weak man who spirals into a personal hell of ambition, murder and madness.Shortly after a victory in battle, Macbeth and his friend Banquo are traveling home across a heath when they encounter three witches -- who greet him with "All hail, Macbeth! hail to thee, Thane of Cawdor! All hail, Macbeth! that shalt be king hereafter!"When MacBeth is made Thane of Cawdor, he naturally begins to think that being king might be next in line. And when King Duncan visits his castle, Lady MacBeth goads her husband into murdering the king and framing a couple of innocent servants for the deed. As the witches predicted, MacBeth becomes king of Scotland.But the witches also prophesied that Banquo would be the father of kings, so MacBeth starts tying off loose ends by hiring assassins to kill Banquo and his young son, as well as a wily thane named MacDuff and all of his family. But though MacBeth believes himself to be safe from everyone, his fear begins to grow as madness and guilt torment him and his wife...One of the most fascinating things about "Macbeth" is how evil it is -- mass murder, insanity, bloody ghosts, a trio of manipulative witches pulling MacBeth's strings, and a nice if weak man who becomes a raving murderous paranoiac. Shakespeare starts the story on a dark note, and it gets darker and bloodier as the story winds on to its bleak climax.In fact, the entire story is a two-part spiral -- things get tighter and more intense, even as MacBeth and Lady M. get crazier and more violent. Shakespeare litters the story with brutally intense scenes (Banquo's ghost crashing the dinner, Lady M. trying to scrub her hands clean) and powerful dialogue ("Shake off this downy sleep, death's counterfeit,/And look on death itself! up, up, and see/The great doom's image!").The one flaw: Shakespeare's handling of the "no man born of woman" prediction is a bit lame. I mean, didn't that count as "born" back in Elizabethan times too?Honestly, MacBeth is both a fascinating and repulsive character. He starts off as a nice ordinary thane with no particular ambition, but his weakness and his wife drive him to some pretty horrible acts. Before long, he's become somebody you desperately want to see diced into little pieces. And Lady Macbeth is little better, although there's a slight disparity between her ruthless ambition and her later insanity."MacBeth" is a story filled with stormy darkness and all-consuming fire -- a powerful depiction of evil and how easily we can be seduced. Just don't say its name in the theater.

A very nice book with lots of history and beautiful pictures. I thought it could have used a few more maps, but the main reason I dropped it a notch was, it definitely does have a bias that comes out on a number of occasions. I agree that the Palestinians have been given a number of very raw deals by Britain, France, the US, UN, ; but I wasn't really expecting much of that to be in the book. Maybe I was naive in thinking that.

I purchased this book, because I already know it in the original. The book I received is in a very good condition and it was surprisingly cheap. There's nothing more you could expect!The book itself is a beautiful guide to several aspects of Palestine. I am however under impression that the English version is much more politically charged than the Arabic version, which - as I believe - is meant to show Palestine itself (which is done with a huge dose of love for Palestine) and not Palestine in the conflict.

Shahin's words and Azar's photography make this book a treasure. They follow every day Palestinians, Palestine's historical past, and their present. A wonderful book on the culture, history, and narrative of Palestine and Palestinians.

This book was a wonderful asset during our visit to Palestine. It provided a needed historical/cultural background in a setting where history is being brutally erased by colonial powers and difficult to find. It is well documented and beautifully illustrated, I strongly recommend it!

This guide gives an honest look at travel through Israel and the West Bank for those seeking to learn about the culture, homeland, and people of Palestine.

Recommended by an English professor, I ordered this comic book version of Beowulf to supplement my reading of the original. Not a comic book reader, I was greatly impressed by the compressed version of the Beowulf tale this book presents, and would recommend it for anyone wanting to introduce themselves, or their children to this classic adventure tale. My son (6) promptly stole this off my desk, and reluctantly returns it to me, only to steal it again the next day. I would also like to add that the end of this book includes excellent source information, and additional suggestions if you (or your children) are interested in finding out more about this tale and time period.I've ordered some others in this series and hope they will be as good!

Very fun, quick version of the old Scandinavian saga. I bought and donated two copies to the school I work at and already kids are devouring them.

My Special Education11th grade class loved reading this before reading Beowulf. An excellent addition to the reading. Good graphics and storyline.

This is a very nice comic book (graphic novel) version of the Beowulf story. My 10-year-old son LOVED it. He is normally a reluctant reader, but he read this in less than a day! This is a perfect book for reluctant readers who enjoy the fantasy genre.

It was action packed all around with mild violence I love it. I wood really recommend this book to people whoa don't want to read novels but graphic novels.

Gift for grandkids - they like visual language and high adventure stories. I like the myths being introduced at such a young age -elementary school ages.

While formal gardens are not currently en vogue, for those of us who love them anyway, Roy Strong illustrates numerous patterned beds that could be applied to any size space and to any style preference. The hard part is choosing. I have tried to get this book for a couple of years at a price that I could afford, and I was thrilled to finally find one on Amazon. It was worth the wait.

If you love the look and symmetry of formal gardens, you will enjoy this book. It has beautiful pictures of small formal garden elements, and also some plans to help create your own.

This is an excellent how to for formal gardens. It has a good balance of well done pictures, text and diagrams. Whether you are trying to create a simple herb garden or large complicated parterres and mazes, this book breaks it down without dumbing it down.The photos and text cover semi-formal styles, like English border gardens, cottage gardens and small backyard spaces. There are good images of knot gardens done in different types of plants and on different scales. There are a number of rose garden styles and herb garden styles. It also covers adding water features, like reflecting pools and ponds into a formal setting. Additionally it has shrub gardens and how to sculpt them.There is a good chapter of illustrated diagrams. It has 18 basic layouts. Each one with relatively detailed instructions on how to create the desired effect. Including suggestion on how to layer the plantings for visual effect. How to mow the lawn to achieve patterns. Suggestions of brick walkway designs. Alternative hedge trimming patterns. And what plants to use. It also suggests what the annual maintenance is for each different style of garden. Which gives you a great idea of what you're getting yourself into!After the layouts there is an index of recommended deciduous shrubs and trees, evergreen shrubs and trees, fruiting and flowering trees, foliage plants, etc....it gives zones and light requirements. And it indicates what each plant would be best suited to. Plant names are all in Latin. The index isn't extensive, it only covers 4 pages, but it does give easily attainable plants.The last pages of the book give illustrations of shaping hedges (with clever ways of keeping them perfectly flat), laying out a perfect knot garden, creating different topiaries, and how to espalier fruit trees.I love this book, and use it often to show my customers different ideas for their spaces.

At first I thought this book would be too sophisticated for a non-professional such as myself - I was wrong! There are many great ideas which I plan to use this summer in my own garden. The author illustrates many garden plans, I have decided to borrow plans from several of them. He also explains tips on how to use symmetry, how to create illusions using height and space, etc. He also explains the history of formal gardens which I found interesting. Another useful feature of this book is the listing of suggested plants for formal gardens and their light requirements. This is the first book I have ever ordered which I picked up and read immediately.

What is there not to like about the writing of James Martin? His style is of such a personal level I feel as though we were chatting at a neighborhood cafe, or should I say the local bar while turning the pages of his book. Martin makes it clear that we all have the potential of being saints through our saintly actions. Saints just perform more than the multitudes that admire them. He includes some who have not been canonized: Thomas Merton, Dorothy Day and Pedro Arrupe (a Jesuit). His portrayal of saints and saintly people is all inclusive and he reveals the blemishes as much as the favorable attributes. As always with Martin, he supplies a sufficient amount of humor to make his My Life with the Saints pleasantly readable and nourishingly digestible.All these good comments and only four stars, not five stars! He left out someone who should have been a strong influence in his life while serving as a missionary in Kenya - Annalena Tonelli. Annalena's humanitarian mission of tending to refugees in Kenya from 1969 - 1985 and ended when she exposed to BBC the genocide of nomads. She was expelled from Kenya and continued to "walk in the footsteps of Jesus" while in Somalia. Her life ended as a martyr when she was assassinated by Somalian extremists in 2003. Sadly, there are no biographies of Annalena in English, only Italian (Io Sono Nessuno). Martin could have helped fill this void and missed a great opportunity to do so.

MY LIFE WITH THE SAINTS is a deeply reflective and often moving treatment of several Catholic saints, some ancient, some modern, some declared, some yet-to-be, some contemplative, some active. Their stories are told in the context of a young priest's encounter with them in his formation as a Jesuit.James Martin, S.J. paints short vignettes of the lives of the saints as he meets them along the path of his vocation, from graduating The Wharton School of Business to serving as a new priest. Martin's story is not that of a pious Catholic school graduate who was always steeped in traditional Catholic culture. Neither is he a particular rebel or outcast who's come back into the fold. Martin is, rather, a kind of ordinary American guy who turns out to have had a vocation to the priesthood. What's more, as shown in this book, he has a true gift as a spiritual writer.I once had a spiritual director who referred to everyone as "saints"; from the perspective of "holiness," I know I sure didn't feel like one, even less, perhaps, these many years later. Most of my acquaintances, then and now, joke about *not* being "saints," that they are too fond of nightlife and generally having a good time to be regarded like someone they think of as pious and self-abnegating. Indeed, Ambrose Bierce described a saint as "A dead sinner revised and edited." He continued (THE DEVIL'S DICTIONARY), "The Duchess of Orleans relates that the irreverent old calumniator, Marshall Villeroi, who in his youth had known St. Francis de Sales, said, on hearing him called saint: `I am delighted to hear that Monsieur de Sales is a saint. He was fond of saying indelicate things, and used to cheat at cards. In other respects he was a perfect gentleman, though a fool.'"Martin's book shows one instance after another that though some saints and other formally undeclared holy men and women were known for their asceticism, others embraced food and laughter. What ties them all together (well, with one exception--Saint Mary) is that they were all sinners, some spectacularly so. But in striving to be Christian in the deepest sense of that term--to dedicate themselves to serving and loving their fellow human beings and thus giving expression to their love and service of God--they were also, as my spiritual director was indicating, saints. Thomas Merton's good friend once told him (quoted by Martin, p. 384), "All that is necessary to be a saint is to want to be one. Don't you believe God will make you what He created you to be, if you consent to let him do it?"Much more than autobiography and hagiography, MY LIFE WITH THE SAINTS inspires the reader to think in a new way about what it means to aspire to holiness. Martin does this by personalizing the saints, what they meant to him and why at various stages in his life. Though this comes from a man whose choice in life is a radical departure from the strongly materialistic society in which he lives, Martin's story is a humble one, able to draw and be meaningful to a wide readership. (If it helps vocations to the Society of Jesus, though, well good for him, too.) The saints Martin describes are made alive in these pages. You come to like them, and to want to ask for the grace to emulate them in their best qualities as saints. How could a Catholic writer hope to accomplish more?

This is one of the best books I've read in a while. Martin describes the lives of the saints in an exciting and vibrant way along with detailing his life in the process. This is definitely a recommended read for anyone who wants to learn more about the saints. It's a very easy read, which makes it even better for someone like myself who is currently just starting to learn more about the saints.

I feel a little bad giving it 3 stars but 4 seems too high. Curse you Amazon, where are the half stars! I can't really put my finger on it, but I guess I would say that it didn't really grab and hold me. It might be because the things about these Saints that the author found appealing were not the things I would find appealing about them and possibly to the contrary. Which is kind of ironic since we are talking about Saints. Then again, not all of them have been declared Saints and that might have contributed to the problem. Perhaps, the title could have been "My Life with the People I Admire and Who Tend to Lean Left." Something that shouldn't come as a surprise from a Jesuit. Maybe the rating shows more about my place on the path to holiness.

I really enjoyed the stories and writing style of James Martin. This is a great introduction to some amazing saints. It made me research more.

I've been a fan of Fr. Martin for a while. He has a knack for writing about spirituality and the Catholic faith in a way that is simple, relatable, and honest. And lets not forget funny. Humor is something that is often so desperately missing in religious writings. So I was not surprised that I really liked this book since those qualities are alive and well. Martin has chosen a nice long list of saints (some of them lesser known, which I love) who have impacted his life one way or another. As Martin describes his connection with these saints, he describes people who were holy, yes, but still PEOPLE. They made mistakes, had their own struggles and weakness and dislikes and small victories. And their lives were funny. For me, that makes them way more inspiring because I can relate to their issues. I'm sure Martin did this intentionally to remind us that we are not alone, and we are not meant to be perfect little Catholic drones. Life is hard and messy and beautiful and funny, often all at the same time, whether you're a saint or one still in the making.
